Finigan the Monkey

Tue Aug 15, 2006, 9:03 PM
It’s been ten human years since the ground rumbled with great disgust; since the planet sneezed and cleared its muddied nose; since Earth scratched off humanity like a shaggy dog in a bed of fleas. But who didn’t see this coming? I mean, any creature to survive already knew about the greedy Humans and their dangerous toys. We all were aware it was just a matter of time.

You see, there was one thing that was readily apparent prior to The Big Boom – Mama Nature has a role for everything… even something as destructive as a bomb. Some people call it retribution for years of abuse. And others refer to it as The Natural Course. But those of us who survived – those of us who made it through the darkest days Earth had ever known - we call it Soap. Nature’s cleanser. Something to wipe away grime and filth in order to leave a fresh, clean smell. And Humans – as smart as they were – failed to realize they were the dirt. Television, fast food, and video games ate away at their better judgment. Eat more, think less, and care not at all. Get dirtier and dirtier and dirtier, until a bath must be taken, and all things must be cleaned.

And looking at it from this side of things, I’d say we’re much better for it. Now that the destruction is over, and the rebirth is well under way – we are beginning to see the true power of nature - the true dawning of a new age. A time when the rivers run clean again, the skies open up, and those that generate life burrow their way back into the warm sun.

But as they rise from their long slumber, they will surely notice differences. They will see that the land is not the same. That human apocalypse brought forth trees, flowers, and fields of beauty beyond any creature’s wildest imagination. I mean who would have ever managed to comprehend The Kopu Vine, The Plastin Muds, The Gropium Wall, and the Great Sea of Fentil? Or the friendly Goglehammer, the docile Perrybuck, or the jovial Santrafter? But perhaps the most beautiful development – more exquisite than even the Huba Leaf or the Felka Blossom – was the discovery of a young creature that survived The Boom. This was an animal that stepped through the suds of humanity and found itself dawning a brand new coat. A creature we will come to know as Finagan.

Finagan, as you may already know, is what humans used to call a “Monkey”. And years in the future, you will come to know him as the leader of our new time – the Revolutionary of Evolution, the Idealist of a New Age – the first animal to learn to bring all species together as one. But more important than that is… the story of Finagan’s youth. The moment when everything changed. When this little primate rediscovered the only beautiful thing Humanity took with it – Love.
